The latest statistics on interprovincial migration in Canada show that 32,816 people moved to Alberta from other parts of the country during the third quarter of 2022 while 13,531 did the opposite. The result was a net gain of 19,285 residents. Alberta’s net gain in residents from other parts of Canada has only been higher on one occasion and that was back in the third quarter of 1980. The increase was, movever, the fifth in a row, suggesting the loss of residents to other parts of Canada that occurred in 19 out of the previous 24 quarters is behind us for now. With Alberta’s economy forecast to post the strongest economic growth of any province in 2023, the net inflow of residents from other parts of the country is likely to continue. Ontario was the main contributor to Alberta’s net gain with 8,645 more people moving from Ontario to Alberta than the other way around. British Columbia was the second largest source of net new residents with 5,960 more people moving from BC to Alberta than vice versa.
