According to the latest Labour Force Survey results, Alberta’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate went from 10.7 per cent in January to 9.9 per cent in February.
With some public health restrictions in the province lifted on February 8, the number of jobs increased by 16,800 (0.8 per cent). Most of the jobs added were full-time positions.
There was, however, some erosion of the labour force, with 3,800 net exits (0.2 per cent).
Compared to a year ago, employment was down by 71,000 (3.1 per cent).
With more public health restrictions lifted on March 1, job growth has likely continued, but we will have to wait for the next batch of statistics to know for sure.
Nationally, employment increased by 259,000 (1.4 per cent) in February and the unemployment rate fell 1.2 percentage points to 8.2 per cent.
